This is just the beginning of the links...more will come. However,
this list of links will never be anywhere near as complete as
Cyndi's List of Genealogical Sites on the
Internet, which is by far the most comprehensive listing of anything and
everything to do with online genealogy that you will find anywhere. In any
event, I've collected a few items that are of particular interest to our little family
and where we come from.
Here are a couple of Czech family research
sites that I have found
particularly useful:
FamilySearch.org (The
LDS-sponsored site that also includes links to the Family History Library in
Salt Lake City as well as a location tool to find the local Family Research
Center nearest you. The Mormons have without a doubt the largest collection
of genealogy materials in the world that they offer to everyone without any
kind of "preaching" to convert to their beliefs. The online searches are
free, but there is a minimal fee to request a microfilm be sent to your
local FRC. All in all, it's a wonderful resource.)
The National Archives
(This is a great source of information. The actual records are not kept
online, but they offer a catalog and links to help find where the records
are located as well as many tips and articles to help get you started.)
The Statue of
Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation (This site contains scanned immages of
thousands of ship manifests listing millions of immigrants. The search
function is a bit awkward to use, but this is where I found records of the
Lamza's immigration to the U.S.)
Ancestry.com (This is the site I subscribe to,
they do a good job of adding new source material on a regular basis. Many
(if not most) of the records that the National Archives offers are available
to be viewed online. Their searches are getting better all the time.)
Genealogy.com (From the makers of
Family Tree Maker. I don't subscribe, so I don't have the details.)
Legacy Family Tree Software:
This is the software I have been using for the past couple of years (I
switched over from Family Tree Maker). They recently released Version 6.0.
The interface isn't as "pretty" as FTM, but it is extremely powerful and
highly customizable and I love it. One of the biggest benefits - it lets you
generate web pages that can be posted on your own site (unlike FTM, which
only lets you post things on their commercial site). Oh, I almost forgot.
They offer a free version that doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but
is a GREAT way to get started and try it out before committing to the very
reasonable price of the full version.
Family Tree Maker: Another
good program and still the
the big boy on the block.
